Video Blogging Is Such a Bad Idea

I just can't stand it when I'm Googling for some valuable information, and when I find it, it's in stupid video form. Video isn't stupid of course but, I can't watch video online because I'm (hides face) am still on dial up. Yes I am. The reason I am on dial up is because I practically live with the deer in the woods of north west Louisiana where dial up is not available. although DSL is available a half a mile up the street, my phone company still says it's not in my "area" yet. They called one day to offer me DSL and I got excited. Only to me let down by a false alarm. But nevermind that. If I'm on dial up, there's plenty more people just like myself that may stumble across your site and will leave automatically right when they see that the article is a video.

The main reasons why video blogging is incredibly harsh to your blog is because:
1) Visitors living in the stone age like myself will leave automatically.
2) Search engines can't crawl your video.

Let me stop right there...

Those two reasons alone are plenty enough to keep me steering clear of video blogging. I'm an SEO freak and want every article possible to be indexed in google. Even if it means one visitor just from that one article for the rest of my blogs life.

Now I can understand that there are some positives to using video rather than text. For starters, your readers get to see the man/woman behind the blog along with their personality. Which is pretty cool. Also, watching and listening with your ears is better than reading in my opinion. I've always been a big movie guy. However, the negatives to video blogging out-weigh the positives to it. With text articles you will be crawled, you will get more traffic. Simple as that.

    I have to admit that I don't tend to watch too many "video posts". We're on broadband and I still find many of them load too slowly to be bothered.

    I think if you're going to use them you need to mix it up a bit and provide text as well (which I've also seen done).

    video no good for seo? crazyness

    do a video post with a transcript and that solves that. Give your visitors the best of both worlds.

    plus with google's universal search it is easier to rank a video than text in many cases

    video for the win!

    @45n5
    Transcripts are a great idea and didn't even cross my mind (like at 45n5). But I've seen too many times where someones blog post is in video alone. That's where I have to leave immediately!

    as far as video search, i didn't know that the average searcher really used it unless they were looking for video. I still say transcripts are the best idea like you said..which I didn't think of when writing this.
