Yesterday I saw an attempt made on DP by a new forum user to steal everyones email passwords. So I thought I'd make a post to let everyone who does not know about this to know about it in case you're ever a victim. It's quite simple actually... The Situation:A girl suspects that her boyfriend might be chatting it up with some other hottie online. So she wants to get into his email account to read his emails just to set her mind at ease, or finally see the real proof. So this girl does a Google search trying to find out how to get someones email password, or she asks on a forum. The girl stumbles upon the perfect page with the perfect info for what she's trying to do exactly. It's perfect! Now she can get into her boyfriends email account and see what naughty girls he's been talking to! Here's an example of what she may find:
The above message is just an example that I wrote of what these could look like. Some are different. And it doesn't matter what type of account it is. Can be AOL, Gmail, Hotmail etc. What REALLY Happens After You Follow Their Instructions:After you do what they say in hopes for retrieving your friends/cheaters/boyfriends/girlfriends password, you'll probably wait patiently as the email arrives with the password so you can have access to their email account. But the above code is fake. It doesn't mean anything. Just some gibberish I wrote out to look like it's some sort of programming code. But average online users don't know that. They think they're doing a hack. The person that provided you the instructions is a scammer. He actually owns pw_recovery_hotmail[at]hotmail.com (an email account to resemble some sort of real hotmail password recovery account) and you just sent him your email account password (remember, you put your password in the subject box). Now this guy will change your password so you can't get into your own account. He also has full access to your entire address book with all your friends emails so he can spam them with offers such as free viagra or anything else that can make him money. Doh! This is just a heads up to everyone who doesn't know about this method. Don't fall for this if you see it around the net somewhere, unless your email account means nothing to you. |
